Mungoa-goa Challenge
Have you ever had to carry 5 gallons of water up a mountain for an entire morning? Children in Mungoa-goa, Cameroon do it all morning, every morning. Their education is limited by the lack of easy access to drinking water. In effect, their sole purpose is to collect water. Engineers Without Borders is partnering with Siemens to put on a race up Freshmen Hill and display new water treatment technologies. The only catch is that the participants will be carrying 5-gallon jerrycans! There will be races run all day and great prizes for the winners. They include gift cards to Bonefish Grill, Subway, Waffle House and Target. T-Shirts will also available for participants! More info and directions are available here. The EWB GA Tech student chapter is currently building a solar powered well in Mungoa-goa and will be accepting donations for the project throughout the day!
American Society of Civil Engineers - GA Chapter Presentation
Andrew Parks (EWB-Atlanta) was the keynote speaker at the ASCEGA conference. He discussed our local and international projects in addition to the establishment of our GA Tech refugee camp student design competition.
Fundraising Concert a Hit A very special thanks to all of you who braved the weather and came out to our fundraising concert. Your contributions totaled over $2,000, which will greatly benefit our international projects. None of this could have been possible without the help of our wonderful volunteers. We'd also like to thank our incredible performers; Justin Brogdon, The Blue Stone Society, and Emily Libman on vocals. Finally we'd like to thank James Taylor for lighting and sound, and Park Tavern for the ballroom.

Mad Housers Homeless Shelter Build a Success Thanks to those of you who braved the elements; something the homeless must do on a daily basis. We were able to complete 2 structures in an hour! Mad Housers is an Atlanta-based non-profit corporation who build single-occupant structures for the homeless in areas where they reside. The huts are not proposed to be permanent housing; instead, they are shelters which offer privacy, security, protection from the elements, and stability. Lockable from the inside, the huts become the property of the homeless client.

EWB/Atlanta Streets Alive Event a Success EWB-Atlanta was invited to showcase engineering demonstrations that promote water conservation at the annual Atlanta Streets Alive event. In one weekend, the average American consumes 300 gallons of water, while over 1 billion of the world's poorest people only have access to 10 gallons. To demonstrate this disparity in an interactive manner, EWB members Andrew Parks and Gerry Pass took turns being dropped into a 300 gallon dunk tank by the ASA crowd. Two 5 gallon buckets were placed next to the tank for comparison. Five hours of hypothermia later, we raised a good amount of money for our projects. The water was later used for irrigation. Thanks to everyone who came out, and a special thanks to Doug Paulin, Heather Bowman, and Pete Romocki for helping to set up.
Heather Bowman (EWB-Atlanta) presented at the GA Tech student chapter about strengthening our student collaborations and jointly establishing new projects. EWB-Atlanta Speaks to Amana Academy 8th Grade Class Andrew Parks (EWB-Atlanta) was priviledged to teach a group of 8th grade physical science students at Amana Academy about the benefits of point-of-use water treatment technologies in poor countries. The presentation included several hands-on demonstrations of practical technologies. Amana has invited EWB-Atlanta to continue participation throughout the school year to help instruct students on science and engineering processes. Independent Projects Program EWB-Atlanta is pleased to announce the establishment of our new Independent Projects Program (IPP). Due to rapid growth and increased administrative burdens, EWB-USA currently restricts each chapter to no more than 2 sanctioned projects at a time, and EWB-Atlanta has reached this limit. The IPP will allow EWB-Atlanta to continue to pursue new international projects. Individual members will be encouraged to partner with established NGOs, propose a potential project to EWB-Atlanta, and establish a project team. All IPP projects will be conducted outside of official EWB-USA capacity, and will in no way be affiliated with EWB-USA. For a list of local NGOs to pursue as a way to get started, click here. Already have an idea for a project? Let us know! EWB-Atlanta establishes a preliminary collaboration with the Atlanta area council of the Boy Scouts. The purpose of this collaboration is to provide mentoring to young men who may be interested in various aspects of the engineering sciences. As needed, the Scouts will request our assistance with providing the opportunity to earn merit badges, or general instruction and involvement. EWB-Atlanta presented at Monticello Presbyterian Church's Outreach Committee dinner. EWB-Atlanta LinkedIn and Facebook social media networking sites launched. All are encouraged to join. The sites are a work in progress and will help to raise awareness and facilitate ease of communication, as well as list relevant updates and discussions. EWB-Atlanta member Heather Bowman gave a presentation to the Georgia Chapter of the Air & Waste Management Association. EWB-Atlanta Interviewed on People TV Channel 24 EWB-Atlanta member Andrew Parks was interviewed on Caribbean Report, a weekly program featured on PeopleTV Channel 24, Atlanta. The topic involved the recent crisis in Haiti as well as EWB-Atlanta's Haiti project. A Special Thanks to Our Haiti Project Donors During the month of December, EWB-Atlanta participated in online fundraisers sponsored by GlobalGiving and Google. Through these and other fundraisers, within 30 days we raised a total of $16,265 for our Haiti Water Supply project, bringing us that much closer to our budget goal. Given the combination of the holidays and the recession it is amazing to see that so many are still able and willing to commit the resources to support the completion of this project. Thank you! Welcome 2010 Officers President: Andrew Parks Vice President: Heather Bowman Secretary: Cara O'Hearn Treasurer: Krishna Maddi EWB-Atlanta Speaks to the Atlanta Section of the Society of Women Engineers EWB-Atlanta members Andrew Parks and Heather Bowman joined the Atlanta Section of the Society of Women Engineers at Everyobody's Pizza in the Virginia Highlands for their holiday social and happy hour. The social focused on ways that engineers can give back to the local community as well as potential partnerships between our organizations. EWB-Atlanta Interviewed on People TV Channel 24 EWB-Atlanta member Andrew Parks was interviewed on Caribbean Report, a weekly program featured on PeopleTV Channel 24, Atlanta. The topic included EWB Atlanta's mission, our projects in the Caribbean, sustainable engineering practices, and the obligation that engineers have to society beyond the technical aspects. Haiti Water Project Followup Assessment Completed On August 10-15, the EWB-Atlanta Haiti water project team returned to the village of Los Palis to conduct a followup assessment. The followup assessment included verification of the production rate of the newly installed well, a survey of the existing and proposed system expansion, water sampling, geological survey, socioeconomic survey, proposal of a memorandum of understanding to the community water committee, negotiations with local materials suppliers, and a meeting with USAID. A special thanks to Harvey Toub of VillageFund for taking the initiative to have one of the hand-pumped wells repaired. To learn more about this project, click here.
