About Our Chapter

EWB-USA has a commitment to delivering sustainable engineering projects with a focus on community involvement both locally and abroad.

Engineers Without Borders - USA Atlanta Professional Chapter (EWB-ATL) was established in 2005 and remains the only professional chapter of EWB-USA in Georgia. Our mission is to support community-driven development programs through the design and implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while fostering responsible leadership in our partnering communities.

Our growing chapter consists of members representing a diverse range of professional disciplines including engineering, construction administration, public health, consulting, project management, marketing, graphic design, and more. This interdisciplinary collaboration helps us deliver solutions that address project needs from all angles, while offering members an opportunity to network with a diverse group of like-minded individuals in the Atlanta area. Our EWB-ATL community believes in our mission and works to:

  • Support developing communities by providing appropriate engineering solutions to identified needs

  • Fundraise to procure equipment and supplies required for implementing and maintaining our projects

  • Mentor and partner with members of the Engineers Without Borders - USA local university chapters

How We Work

EWB-ATL collaborates with remote, developing communities usually off the radar of larger aid organizations. We make a commitment to each partnering community to understand, design, implement, and maintain low-cost, small-scale, replicable, and sustainable infrastructure projects. It is our primary goal to provide a quality product to our partners while respecting the community’s interests, traditions, history, and culture.

The communities identify a need and apply for project aid through EWB-USA, typically with the assistance of a local non-governmental organization (NGO). Once a program has been established, EWB-ATL volunteers train local community members, NGO staff, and others to monitor, maintain, and take ownership of the projects. Additionally, EWB-ATL focuses on providing basic water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) awareness training, as well as developing managerial, technical, and entrepreneurial skills that community members can apply in the future.

Our Core Values

EWB-ATL has established the following values as being fundamental to our operations and the execution of our mission.

  • Service: We contribute our time and expertise for the intrinsic value of being of service to others.

  • Community: We believe the whole of our membership is greater than the sum of its members. Fostering a collaborative membership leads to improved outcomes for the developing communities we serve.

  • Accountability: We hold each other accountable to the highest standard of quality in the pursuit of our work.

  • Empowerment: We hold that our work is fundamentally a means of empowering our partner communities to meet their basic human needs and equipping our members to solve the world’s most pressing challenges.
